Passport woes

Reported on October 16, 2011 from Mumbai , Maharashtra  ι Report #3723

I had recently applied for a passport for my wife through a travel agent. The agent had charged me Rs. 500 apart from the actual fees for issuance of a new passport. As instructed we got a call from the local police station for verification. The agent had already informed us to pay the policeman a sum of Rs.300 as a processing charge. My wife visited the police station however on reaching there she was in for a surprise as the police man demanded Rs.500 for processing the application. This hike was to expedite the processing of the application and to overlook the fact that the NOC letter of the society mentioned that we were staying at our residence for more than a year wherein we had recently shifted were 2 months away from completing a year.

I believe this kind of charge is being taken at all the police stations across the state and it varies from Rs.300 to Rs.500 depending on the case of an individual. I myself had paid Rs.300 as a processing charge at ********** Road police station for issuance of a new passport.
