Seat-belt violation--cop prefers bribes to fine!

Reported on October 15, 2011 from Jaipur , Rajasthan  ι Report #3729

We had a seat-belt violation as we were driving around a circle just after the Hawa Mahal. We were motioned aside by a constable; I parked on the side of the road, and I walked back with him to pay the fine of Rs 300/. It was clear from the look on his face what he really wanted, but I wanted to see if I could pay the lawful fine and move on. I think he clearly realized that we were out of state and started some story about how I would have to leave my driver's license behind. Not knowing the procedures, and being somewhat tired from a long journey, I capitulated, and stuck out a Rs 100/ note, which he gleefully accepted. My wife overheard a couple of cops talking amongst themselves about how good this particular chap was getting at catching out-of-towners!

If anyone from the Jaipur police is reading this, I am happy to file a formal complaint, and travel to Jaipur at my expense to follow-up. I am pretty sure I can identify the cop. Please leave a comment on what the procedure is, in that case.
